How to Schedule Non-Emergency Medical Transport (NEMT)

May 29, 2026 3 min read OSMT Medical Editorial Team
Scheduling medical transport doesn't have to be complicated. Whether you need a wheelchair van or a Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance dispatch, following these steps ensures a seamless booking:

1. Determine the Correct Level of Mobility:
- Ambulatory: Can walk with minor assistance.
- Wheelchair: Requires a specialized vehicle with a lift/ramp.
- Stretcher: Bed-confined or unable to sit upright.
- BLS Ambulance: Needs continuous oxygen, monitoring, or clinical EMT support.

2. Gather Pick-up and Destination Details:
Have complete addresses, physician suite numbers, appointment times, and emergency contact numbers ready for the dispatch team.

3. Provide Clear Medical Context:
Inform coordinates if the passenger is bariatric, requires supplemental oxygen, or has cognitive impairments.

4. Book in Advance:
To secure your preferred pickup window, try to book at least 24 to 48 hours in advance, especially for early morning dialysis runs or clinic discharges.
